Wild Blue or Blue False Indigo (Baptisia australis), is a pea family perennial that is grown ornamentally or as a niche nitrogen fixer. Seed pods are really beautiful too, and dry on the plant and make a fun rattling noise. The spent stalks and seeds are sometimes used in flower arrangements. Botanically distinct from True or Dye Indigo (Indigofera tinctoria). Perennial that can flower in its first year if seeded in late winter/early spring; will overwinter in climate zones 3 and above and reach 2-3 feet in its second year.
