HOW TO PLANT Old German Dill SeedsOld German Dill (Anethum graveolens var. germamicum) is a popular herb that is easy to grow and produces flavorful foliage and seeds used in various culinary dishes. Here are the basic steps for planting Old German Dill seeds:Choose a site: Old German Dill prefers full sun and well-drained soil with a pH of 6.0 to 7.0. Dill can also tolerate partial shade and doesn’t require rich soil.Prepare the soil: Work the soil to a depth of at least 6 inches to loosen it and remove any large debris. You can amend your soil with well-rotted manure or compost if your soil is poor.Sow the seeds: Sow the seeds directly into the soil about 1/8 inch deep and about 1/2-1 inch apart. No garden is complete without Onions. Texas Early Grano is a wonderful heirloom variety with good old-fashioned taste. Released by the Texas Agricultural Experimental Station in 1944. 1933 began the Texas onion breeding program which was to produce the Mother “Grano 502″ which was in the parentage of all SuperSweet onions such as Granex (Vidalia, Maui Maui and NoonDay) and the Texas 1015Y. Texas early grano forms large globe shaped vidalia-type onions. Fine eating quality, nicely uniform with a white flesh. Nice flavor that is not too pungent. Texas Early Grano is a short day variety, but works well as an indeterminate day variety of onion as well. Slightly sweet mild, long white globes with stiff blue-green tops. Looks like a long slim leek with a 3-4” white globe of onion flesh on the end. A sweet and mild bulbing onion. Excellent yields. Great for salads and garnishes. Perfect for stir fry dishes and other dishes that call for great onion flavor. Onions start bulb formation when the day length is of the proper duration and different varieties of onions require different day lengths to initiate bulbing. These peppers are green for most of their life but once they reach maturity, they magically transform into a deep red pepper. These plants produce large yields of blocky, mostly four-lobed, thick-walled fruit that is mild and sweet (Capsicum Annuum). The ever bearing, upright bush plant produces fruits up to 4 inches long by 4 inches wide that weigh around 6 oz each. This is a great plant to start inside and then later transplant outside after the last frost. The soil temperature must be no less than 65°F at the time of transplant. They can be grown in containers but it must be a rather large container. California Wonder peppers also need summer shade but at least 6 hours of sunlight per day. They resist most pests and offer something for everyone: spicy, sweet or hot, and a variety of colors, shapes and sizes. For this page, we will focus on sweet bell peppers. PLANTING Start seeds indoors 8-10 weeks before last spring frost date. Plant seeds 1/4″ to 1/2″ deep. The temperature must be at least 70 degrees F for seed germination, so keep them in a warm area for the best and fastest results. Start pepper seeds three to a pot, and thin out the weakest seedling. Let the remaining two pepper plants spend their entire lives together as one plant. The leaves of two plants help protect peppers against sunscald, and the yield is often twice as good as two segregated plants. Begin to harden off plants about 10 days before transplanting. A week before transplanting, introduce fertilizer or aged compost in your garden soil. PESTS/DISEASES Aphids Flea Beetles Cucumber Mosaic Virus Blossom End Rot appears as a soft, sunken area which turns darker in color. Pollination can be reduced in temperatures below 60F and above 90F. Too much nitrogen will reduce fruit from setting. HARVEST/STORAGE Harvest as soon as peppers reach desired size. The longer bell peppers stay on the plant, the more sweet they become and the greater their Vitamin C content. Use a sharp knife or scissors to cut peppers clean off the plant for the least damage. Peppers can be refrigerated in plastic bags for up to 10 days after harvesting. Bell peppers can be dried, and we would recommend a conventional oven for the task. Wash, core, and seed the peppers. Cut into one-half-inch strips. Steam for about ten minutes, then spread on a baking sheet. Dry in the oven at 140 degrees F (or the lowest possible temperature) until brittle, stirring occasionally and switching tray positions. When the peppers are cool, put them in bags or storage containers.
