Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE Pennsylvania Red is an American classic non-GMO heirloom cigar and pipe tobacco that has been around prior to 1884 and still remains an exceptional choice for cigar binder, filler and pipe blends. Pennsylvania red is like the big brother of Little Dutch. It has a similar deep rich, creamy and slightly sweet flavor profile like Little Dutch, but lacks the characteristic sweeter floral aroma Little Dutch has. While Little Dutch is one of my personal favorites flavor wise Pennsylvania red is a close second and is arguably more “blendable” when the slightly sweeter floral aroma of Little Dutch may be a bit too strong for some blends. Pennsylvania Red often grows 5-6 feet in height and has a heavy yield of dark green leaves with a lighter colored midrib that approaches three feet in length. Pennsylvania Red matures in about 65-70 days and is a pretty hardy tobacco variety with a long history of being grown in the US. As shown in the picture of the leaves above, Pennsylvania Red easily airs cures from a lighter reddish brown (volado leaves) to a beautiful darker reddish brown (secco and viso leaves) to a deep dark red on the top most ligero leaves. Unlike many cigar tobaccos Pennsylvania Red is decent to use after air curing and allowing to age for a few months (instead of years). Pennsylvania red is an excellent choice for cigar binder, filler, and many of the homegrown leaves would more than suffice for wrapper quality. Pennsylvania red is also excellent for pipe blends, chewing tobacco, and can be substituted for the dark air cured tobacco component (usually 5-10%) that is often present in many cigarette blends. Pennsylvania Red is one of the classic American tobaccos that is worth adding to your grow. All plants were grown here in the beautiful USA and seed was collected from bagged flower heads to ensure varietal purity.
