The light green leaves grow up to 36″ in length and average 22″-24″ inches wide. This pyramidal shaped plant can reach 7′ in height and matures in approximately 70 days. Burley grows slower in the first half of the season with its growth spurt occurring 2-3 week later than many other varieties. This a trait common to several white stemmed burleys. But it quickly catches up and surpasses other types by the end of its second month. The leaves turn yellow on the edges and have yellow mottling when ripe. It is easy to cure and is an excellent plant for priming or whole stalk curing. The leaves air cure to a light golden brown producing a smooth smoking, full flavor tobacco with a nicotine content of approximately 4%. It is an excellent choice for blending with bright leaf varieties in cigarette blends. How to Grow Tobacco Growing your own tobacco is so easy and not dissimilar to growing tomatoes. Place commercial seedling compost into a tray and soak the soil with water and allow the excess water to drain off. Sprinkle the tobacco seeds onto the surface of the damp soil. Do not cover the seeds, as they need light for germination. Tobacco seeds are very tiny, so be careful to spread the seeds as evenly as possible. Keep the soil damp being careful not to wash the seeds around when you water; better still water from below or use a mist sprayer. At a temperature of 75-80 degrees, seeds typically take a matter of days to germinate; though at this stage they are still rather small. At lower temperatures, the germination simply takes a few days longer. Plants are ready to be transplanted into bigger pots, when the leaves are about 1cm in length. Care should be taken not to disturb the roots. Feed should only be given to established and rapidly growing plants after they have been replanted. Ideally, space the tobacco plants about 2 ft. apart in rows 3 ft. apart. Transplant outside in the evening or when it is cloudy and overcast to avoid the youngsters from drying out. Water plants thoroughly after transplanting and water daily until plants become established. Like tomato plants, the branches (suckers), should be removed to focus the plants energy on the large leaves. Tobacco plants generally require full to partial sunlight to grow properly. Tobacco is ready to be harvest after 60-90 days after germinating. We currently offer 9 different varieties of tobacco seeds including Burleys, Virginia, cigar and chewing tobacco strains. Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE With the price of tobacco skyrocketing why not grow your own? Small Stalk Black Mammoth Small stalk black mammoth is a good multi-purpose heirloom tobacco variety. It is classified as a dark tobacco and can be fire cured or used as is. Its large bold flavored leaves make an excellent cigar wrapper and binder. It’s a favorite among many people for chewing tobacco and also makes a nice blending component for pipe tobacco when a dark rich flavored tobacco is desired. Fire curing adds an additional level of complexity to its dark rich flavor profile for pipe blends and chewing tobacco. Small stalk black mammoth typically gets about 4-5 feet in height. In my growing location (mid-south) they average about 4 feet and have a decent yield of heavy leaves. It’s not one of the tallest varieties if you are trying to grow a monster plant, but their shorter stature benefits in making them a lot less prone to blowing over during inclement weather. I have not observed any disease issues with this variety and it appears to be fairly hardy and drought tolerant once established. All plants were grown here in the beautiful USA and seed was collected from bagged flower heads to ensure varietal purity. I do not use any non-organic pesticides, fungicides or herbicides on my plants. Germination instructions and growing tips will be included with your order.
