Capsicum chinense × Capsicum frutescens is an annual in the Solanaceae family. Hybrid pepper cultivated in Northeast India. Some common names include ghost pepper or bhut jolokia. It was the hottest pepper in 2007, with over 1,000,000 Scoville heat units. The Trinidad Scorpion Butch T pepper passed it, and then it was passed by the Carolina Reaper in 2013. The plants get almost 4 feet tall with peppers that can be red, yellow, orange, or chocolate in color. Unlike most peppers, ghost peppers produce capsaicin in vesicles found in both the placenta around the seeds and the fruit. Used in many dishes such as chili, curries, chutneys, and pickles. Annual Germination Sow seeds 1/4" deep and lightly cover with a medium. Keep moist in a bright spot. Do not cover with plastic but maintain a temperature around 65-75F. Germination 7-14 days.
