DESCRIPTION: Zeylanicum is a species bulb and one of the most beautiful. The flowers have dark burgundy-red stripes on the keel (outside of bud). Typical of zeylanicum and its hybrids, the red stripe is darker towards the edge of the flower and fades as it gets near the center where almost all other striped crinum have stripes that fade towards the edge of the flower. The petals bear long, claw-like tips, and the flowers always have a spicy scent. The bulbs are round and globular and should be set deeply (this protects from frost but can slow their multiplication for which they are prone). This plant is found commonly in south Florida as a pass-along plant and can be somewhat sensitive to cold weather. The blooming begins in late July and re-blooming is common in the fall. Here in northeast Florida, zone 9, where we have mild freezes, we have observed blooms every month from June-October. The species is defined by a fleshy rib underneath the leaf that is lighter in color, a dominant gene that is passed on to its offspring. The darkest forms are nearly as brilliant as C. scabrum but most are lightly striped with pink. Leaves may undulate like C. scabrum or spread in flattened rosettes. Flowers are 6" in diameter, and we have recorded as many as 12 flowers on 32" tall scapes. The largest bulb we have reached 6" in diameter but this is not typical. Bulbs start to bloom at about 3", and mature bulbs typically produce a couple of offsets per year. We grow over 1000 different crinum including about 350 of our own hybrids. BACKGROUND: Zeylanicum is a fertile species which produces a few seeds, especially if they are hand pollinated. It is also known as Ceylon Swamp Lily or Milk & Wine Lily. It was first identified by Linnaeus in 1771 and originated in India and East Africa. It was used extensively by Luther Burbank in hybridization and by many others since then. White, pink and striped offspring are produced by Zeylanicum. It has sired striped hybrids with C. americanum such as ‘Maureen Spinks’ and ‘Veracruz’. These crosses are typically known as C. X baconi type hybrids, are less cold hardy than the Nassau Lily (X digweedii), but are fragrant, beautiful and grow well along the Gulf Coast. We grow several forms of zeylanicum obtained from several sources and this one seems to be the most hardy. GROWING CONDITIONS: This is a somewhat tender, but easy to grow bulb that will do well along the Gulf Coast. It tolerates a wide range of soils preferring rich, moist soils but needs warmer temperatures (probably OK down into the high teens), at least to zone 8 (if planted deeper and mulched). They should do best planted in the ground in full sun or partial shade, and they will also make excellent container plants. They can survive nicely out of the ground for very extended periods if allowed to dry. DESCRIPTION OF ITEM FOR BID: You are bidding on a small-size bulb at least 1 year old and about 1/2 - 1" in diameter which should bloom within 3-4 years. These grow a bit slower than most crinum. Crinum do not like to be moved, so it might temporarily lose its leaves and can take a year just to "settle in." Bulbs will be freshly dug, shipped bare root and with leaves March-November. In the winter months the leaves may be absent. WE SIZE OUR BULBS APPROXIMATELY BY AGE AS FOLLOWS: A few varieties can take 6 years or more to bloom.
