New Mexico chiles are pod varieties of the annum species. The plant has a mostly compact habit with an intermediate number of stems and grows twenty to thirty inches tall. The leaves are oval, medium green, fairly smooth, and about three inches long and two inches wide. The flower corollas are unblemished white. The pods are pendulous, elongated, pointed, and two to twelve inches long. They are dark green and mature to various shades of red. Some ornamental plants are yellow or brown. Their heat varies from fairly mild to medium. Their growing period is about eighty days, and each plant produces ten to twenty pods, depending on the variety and growing techniques.
