2023 EUPHORBIA / GOPHER PLANT PERENNIAL UPRIGHT MYRTLE / SILVER SPURGE PLANT & FLOWER SEEDS (15 SEEDS) (01) The perennial euphorbia (Euphorbia rigida) is most commonly known in our area as “gopher plant.” With its thick silver leaves spiraling up branches that may also creep along the ground, it creates an architecturally interesting shape in the garden, even before flowering. Blooms start reliably appearing in late winter and last throughout spring. The true gopher flower is quite small and creamy yellow; however, it is held with large chartreuse bracts. This makes for a very showy arrangement. The term “bracts” refers to modified leaves growing just below the flower or cluster of flowers. On some gopher plants, the leaves will take on a blush of pink, providing additional color. They can be especially eye-catching spilling over a wall or in a vivid ceramic container. A native of South Africa, gopher plants thrive throughout the Mediterranean, Morocco to Portugal, Turkey, and Iran. This euphorbia is cold hardy down to 10 degrees, so has survived our past winter in fine shape. It also adapts to the desert heat and is drought tolerant. Gopher plants can be planted directly into the ground or propagated by seed or cuttings. They do best in sandy, rocky, well-drained soil, often not surviving in heavy, wet soil. Planting in full sun is acceptable, preferably with light afternoon shade. 2 Feet Tall Gopher Plant are extremely hardy, handling hot full day sun to freezing temperatures in the winter. These plants are quick growers reaching upwards of 3 feet wide by 2 feet tall. Shipped with USPS First Class
