97% germination rate tested 2021 Description A low lying plant, often reaching only 1-2ft, but occasionlly 6ft. It is a perennial, but can be grown as an annual. Plant and fruits resemble its relatives the ground cherry and chinese lantern. Hardiness Hardy to temperatures in the mid 30s (F), but can be grown pretty much anywhere as an annual. Growing Environment Does well in warm and/or arid climates, although water should be provided through long dry spells. Can be grown in a container. Propagation By seeds. Germination Info Germination requirements of ashwagandha are similar to peppers and tomatoes. Plant seeds approximately 1/4-1/2 deep in moist, well drained potting soil. Soil temperature must be kept at 75-90F for proper germination. Cool soil, particularly at night can inhibit or significantly delay germination. To keep soil temperature warm, start seeds indoors, in a greenhouse and/or use a seed starting heat mat. Keep soil moderately moist, though not overly, dripping wet. Water soil when the soil surface just begins to dry. Allow proper air circulation for containers. Germination usually takes a few weeks.

Withania Somnifera Also known as: Indian Ginseng, Ashwagandha, Poison Gooseberry, Winter Cherry A short tender perennial shrub grown as an annual, like a tomato, and will only reach 35–75 cm (14–30 in) tall. Tomentose branches extend radially from a central stem. The small green flowers are hermaphrodite (having both male and female organs). The ripe fruit is orange-red. It will flower and fruit in its first year from seed. It is one of the most widespread tranquilizers used in India, where it holds a position of importance similar to ginseng in China but it’s easier and faster to grow. It acts mainly on the reproductive and nervous systems. Roots are dug in the Fall, dried, and used to improve vitality, enhance sexuality, promote restful sleep, anemia and to aid recovery after illness. The whole plant, but especially the leaves and the root bark, are abortifacient, adaptogen, antibiotic, aphrodisiac, deobstruent, diuretic, narcotic, strongly sedative and tonic. Internally, it is used to tone the uterus after a miscarriage and also in treating post-partum difficulties. It is also used to treat nervous exhaustion, debility, insomnia, wasting diseases, failure to thrive in children, impotence, infertility, multiple sclerosis etc. Externally it has been applied as a poultice to boils, swellings and other painful parts. The fruit is diuretic. The seed is diuretic and hypnotic. The berries can be used as a substitute for rennet in cheese making. The seeds are used to curdle plant milks in order to make vegetarian cheeses. Seeds need good sun light to germinate and to be pressed into a damp, firm seed flat.
