Withania Somnifera Also known as: Indian Ginseng, Ashwagandha, Poison Gooseberry, Winter Cherry A short tender perennial shrub grown as an annual, like a tomato, and will only reach 35–75 cm (14–30 in) tall. Tomentose branches extend radially from a central stem. The small green flowers are hermaphrodite (having both male and female organs). The ripe fruit is orange-red. It will flower and fruit in its first year from seed. It is one of the most widespread tranquilizers used in India, where it holds a position of importance similar to ginseng in China but it’s easier and faster to grow. It acts mainly on the reproductive and nervous systems.
