It grows naturally in tropical rainforests at elevations of 2,500-4,000 feet but mainly growing around 2,500-feet in elevation. The wood is rugged, making tool handles, charcoal, and firewood. The fruit’s skin is often removed to achieve a sweeter flavor and is used in making jams, while the leaves are used to make tea. It can grow to around 40 feet tall but is usually approximately 6-10 feet tall and wide with reddish-brown bark. The leaves are oval, about 1-2 inches long. The flowers are white and grow in clusters of 3 or individually. The fruits are edible but have a very short shelf life, and fruit flies seem to get the better of them. It takes 3-7 years to bear fruit like most fruit trees. It prefers to grow in full sun to part shade with average water needs. Birds, bees, and butterflies are attracted to it.
