Wallichia disticha is a palm tree in the Arecaceae family. Its native range is from the eastern Himalayas to China. Familiar names include Distichous Fishtail Palm or Wallich Palm. A medium-sized palm that grows extremely fast once established. It naturally grows in lowlands, rainforests, and rocky slopes. A unique-looking palm with an unusual growth habit. The leaves grow in a single file on each side of the stems. The crown is usually half the height of the tree. It can grow to 25-30 feet tall in the correct habitat but is seen around 10-15 feet in cultivation. The leaves are fibrous and coarse in a fishtail shape. They get 15-20 inches long and 2-3 inches wide. The trunk is covered in a crisscrossed fiber mat. It is a short-lived tree, living approximately 15 years then blooming for 5, and finally dying which means it is monocarpic. It prefers to grow in full sun to part shade with average water needs. Zones 9-11 Germination With a nail file, rub seeds until you break through the outer coat. Soak seeds in warm water for 24 hours. Sow seeds the thickness of the seeds on top of the medium and cover. Keep moist in a bright spot. Keep temperatures around 75-85F. Germination is in 4-30 days.
