Asclepias tuberosa Gay Butterflies is a perennial in the Apocynaceae family. Some common names include Butterfly Weed, Canada root, chieger flower, wind root, flux root, or Indian posy. A native to North America in the Eastern and Southwestern regions. This is the most purchased Milkweed for your Monarch Butterflies because of the amount of nectar it provides for the Monarch and many other insects. It can grow to 3 feet tall and wide. The flowers come out in clusters of orange, Red, and Yellow. The leaves are great for the chrysalis to hang from and provide food as well. It can grow in most soils with adequate drainage. It prefers full sun to part shade but will bloom more in full sun. Zones 3-9 Germination Mix seeds and soil together in a ziplock bag. Write the name of the seed on the bag. Place in the refrigerator for 60 days. Seed should be sown into well-drained, sandy compost and covered to their own depth with sand or grit. Place the seed tray in filtered light and keep moist.
