Syzygium smithii is a tree in the Myrtaceae family. Its native range is in Australia. Familiar names include Narrow-Leaved Lilly Pilly, Lilly Pilly Tree, Coast Satinash, Eungella gum, and Monkey Apple. It is found growing in the rainforests and scrubs of northern Australia. It can grow to 60 feet tall and 30 feet wide with a reddish-brown trunk that is sometimes scaly and blocky. The leaves are ovate and a deep green 1-3 inches long. The fragrant flowers are white and in bloom from late spring until mid-summer. The fruits or berries are a pinkish-purple in the fall. The berries are edible and made into jams. The wildlife thrives on the berries. It prefers to grow under full sun to part shade with medium water needs. It will require some sand or loam in the soil. Zones 9-11 Germination Sow seeds 1/2" and lightly cover. Keep moist in a bright spot. Do not cover with plastic and keep temperatures around 65-80F. Germination is in 30-60 days.
