Spinach Seeds - Bloomsdale Long Standing Open Pollinated, Heirloom Days to Maturity: 45 days Heat Resistant Bloomsdale Longstanding Spinach is a long loved old-time favorite and one of the more outstanding open-pollinated varieties available. For home gardeners and farmers, leaves are beautifully savoyed glossy dark green. It offers excellent flavor and tender leaves. Developed by Dan Landreth in the late 1880s, Bloomsdale Longstanding Spinach is high yielding and stands well without bolting during hot weather, if watered well and kept moist. Plant spring and fall. Makes a great addition to summer salads and dips. GENERAL GROWING INFORMATION Sowing: Spinach is a fast growing cool-weather spring and fall crop. Select sunny location, cultivate and fertilize with vegetable food. Plant in spring as soon as soil can be worked, repeating every 2 weeks until weather warms. Sow again in late summer for Fall crop. Sow seed sparingly, firming soil over row. Sowing Method: Direct Sow/Indoor Sow Sowing Depth: 1/2 inch, Sow 9-10 seeds per foot Germination: 7-14 days, 50-70ºF. Seeds go dormant at temperatures above 85ºF. Sun: Full Sun Height: 8-12 inches Spread: 4-6 inches Days to Maturity: 45 days Botanical Name: Spinacia oleracea 'Bloomsdale Long Standing' Plant spacing: 8 to 10 inches apart To spread or place the seeds in a medium where it can start to germinate. Row Spacing: 12-18 inches Thinning: 8 inches Soil Requirements: Light, rich, excellent drainage soil. pH 6.0 - 6.8 Care: Thin first to 3 inches then to 6 inches. Use thinnings in salad. Detailed planting instructions: When To Plant Spacing & Depth Direct seed or transplant in early spring, as soon as you can work the soil. To get an early start, prepare beds the previous fall by working in manure or compost and raking smooth to leave a fine seedbed. If a fall crop is desired, begin in late summer. Direct-seeding: Sow seed 1/2 inch deep, 1 inch apart in rows 12 to 18 inches apart. When plants have two or three true leaves, thin to 6 to 10 inch spacing. You can also lightly broadcast seed in a patch instead of a row. Repeat at 2-week intervals until late spring for a continuous supply of spinach throughout the season. Transplants: Sow in 1-inch cells 3 to 4 weeks before transplanting outside. Harden seedlings by reducing water and temperature for 3 days before transplanting. Care The key to spinach production is supplying moderate but almost constant water, especially during hot weather. Unless there is regular rainfall, spinach must be watered deeply at least once a week—more frequently during periods of drought. Mulch to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Harvest Harvesting spinach is relatively simple: Spinach can be cut as soon as it is large enough to use, usually in 40 to 50 days from planting. For the best quality, it's better to pick early than late as spinach allowed to grow too long may be bitter and tough. Cut the plant right at the soil line when mature. Cutting every other plant at the ground will give remaining plants more space for growth. To keep the plants producing longer, harvest only the outer leaves, as needed. Try to harvest in the morning when the leaves are crisp, sweet and full of moisture. Germination: Seeds Packets are labeled with seed name and sowing details.
