Sphaeralcea coccinea is a perennial or Alpine Rock garden plant in the Malvaceae family. Its native range is from western and central Canada to the central U.S.A and northeast Mexico. Familiar names include Copper Mallow, Prairie Mallow, and Scarlet Globemallow. It grows in the grasslands and prairies of the Great Plains. It can grow to around 18 inches tall and a foot wide from spreading rhizomes. The leaves are gray and covered in hairs on alternate leaves. The leaves are around an inch long in a wedge shape. The flowers are fragrant saucer-shaped with an orange-red color to them. They are in bloom from May until October. Birds, bees, and butterflies are attracted to it. It prefers to grow in full sun to part shade with average water needs. Zones 5-9 Germination Soak seeds for 6-8 hours in warm water. Sow seeds 1/4" deep and lightly cover seeds with soil. Keep warm in a bright spot until germination.
