Rhododendron macrophyllum is a shrub in the Ericaceae family. Common names are Pacific rhododendron, California rosebay, California rhododendron, coast rhododendron, or big leaf rhododendron. A native to the Pacific Coast in North America. This is a large leaf Rhododendron, and the flower is the State flower for Washington. This evergreen shrub can grow to 30 feet tall. The flowers have five lobes and are usually pink to dark pink in color and will bloom in Mid Spring. It can grow in light shade in most soils that are well-drained. Zones 6-9 Germination You should use a well-drained, sandy compost with sand or grit. Sow seeds on top of the soil and tamp in. Place the seed tray in filtered bright light and keep moist until germination.
