Lactuca sativa Min Qty/Packet: 4 grams Late 1800's heirloom and still very dependable, slow to bolt, heat tolerant with large, curly leaves. One of the earliest and probably the most popular loose-leaf lettuce. Very easy to grow and perfect for container gardening. 45 days. Can be started indoors in cooler climates as early as March or outdoors as soon as the soil can be worked. Sprinkle seeds onto prepared beds or rows and cover with a layer of soil. Choose a location that gets full sun to partial shade in soil that is rich and well-drained. Keep evenly moist until seedlings emerge, ususally within a week or two. Thin seedlings or transplant from indoors to 8" apart when they a few sets of true leaves. Lettuce requires even mositure during the growing season and are heavy nitrogen feeders. Sow every 2 weeks for a continuous crop. Cover with shade cloth when temps heat up to extend growth and reduce tendency to bolt.
