Malva sylvestris ssp mauritiana is a biennial or perennial in Malvaceae family. Its native range is the Iberian Peninsula, Italy, and Algeria. Common names are Mauritiana Mallow or Purple Mallow. They are lovely to bees and butterflies and are terrific as cut flowers. It can grow to 3-5 feet tall and a few feet wide. This variety of Malva grows more upright than other Malvas. The flowers are a very intense color of royal purple with cloudy streaking of darker purple on the inside. They are in bloom from late spring until mid-fall. They prefer to grow in full sun to part shade with average water needs. Zones 4-8 Germination Seeds germinate very irregularly over a long period. Lower temperatures of less than 41°F are very effective. Seed trays should not be discarded prematurely. A constant moisture must be maintained. Do not leave in direct sunlight.
