DESCRIPTION: In our opinion, digweedii flowers are some of the most INCREDIBLE blooms in the world of crinums, certainly ranked in our top 10 list, and we grow over 1000 varieties of crinum, including about 350 of our own hybrids, and several very distinct varieties of digweedii. Digweedii or "Nassau Lily" is a term that refers to any hybrid form of Milk and Wine crinum that have a star, not a trumpet shape, with wide, overlaping tepals/sepals. The star-shaped bloom has a light (sometimes darker) pink stripe down the middle about 1/4" wide and usually forms 6-8 buds that are light pink on the outside before opening into HUGE 7" blooms with pink stamens. Digweedii 'No Kidding' (named after Texas the family that sold us the bulbs) has up to 8, 7 inch diameter flowers with a light pink stripe on scapes up to 36" tall. They are VERY fragrant, smelling like lilac. The spindle-shaped bulbs multiply by short stolons (very short fleshy root extension that grow out from base of the bulb) to form compact, upright clumps. They will form large, beautiful clumps if left undisturbed for many years. One nice feature is that large bulbs can produce several offsets in a year. but this one does not multiply as fast as some that we grow. BACKGROUND: Officially named C x Digweedii when crossed in 1820, was probably a cross of C. americanum and C. scabrum. In collections it appears under pseudonyms such as Erubescens, Fimbriaulum, Submersum or ‘Royal White.’ It is none of these. They date back in the South over 125 years where sisters in a San Patricio, TX convent cultivated them as early as 1876. Stars and Stripes is one hybrid form of Digweedii from Thad Howard. These bulbs were donated to the Marbleridge Ranch near Austin, TX by a lady who said they were hierloom plants that had been growing in her garden for many years. The ranch sells plants to raise money for handicapped men who live there, and a family by the name of Kidd, bought a large number of bulbs and sold them to us in 2003 after growing them for about 10 years. GROWING CONDITIONS: This is a semi-hardy and easy to grow bulb requiring no special care. It tolerates a wide range of soils and cool temperatures, at least to zone 8. They appear in the second half of the summer opening in the early evening and you can smell them just walking nearby. They should do best planted in the ground in full sun or partial shade, but they will also make excellent container plants. They can survive nicely out of the ground for very extended periods if allowed to dry.
