DESCRIPTION: Americanum is our native southeastern US crinum that grows along waterways and in swamps. It is often confused with its South American cousin, Erubescens, which is often improperly sold as C. americanum. The plants are virtually identical, however, americanum needs more moisture to bloom while erubescens can do fine in regular garden culture. It has 5-8 white blossoms with thin sepals and reddish-pink stamens. It is particularly striking when it blooms, because all flowers open within 24 hours and remain beautiful for several days. Flowers are fragrant and, since it is a species, it forms large green seeds, similar to C. asiaticum and C. bulbispermum which are easy to grow. It is also unusual because it forms new offsets by sending out long, fleshy rhizome roots (often several feet) with the new leaves coming up at the end of the root. Flowers bloom on 18-30" tall scapes and form a neat, dome-type shape. Multiple scapes will emerge from larger bulbs, extending the blooming period. Leaves are sword-shaped and more erect than most crinum. Mature bulbs will grow to be about 3" in diameter and will spread their new roots to a large area unless contained. Americanum has been used to produce many hybrids. This is another highly desirable plant to have in the garden or crinum collection, because it is beautiful, easy and fun to grow, and will give you something to trade or share with your friends. The bloom, because of its shape and the fact that all of the flowers are open at once is one of our favorites among the over 1000 different crinum that we grow. BACKGROUND: This is our native C. americanum ("Swamp Lily"), a stoloniferous wildflower that inhabits estuaries in the darkest Southern swamplands and which demands similar conditions in the garden. C. americanum will not bloom unless it is in moist, swampy conditions. In the garden trade it is often improperly sold as C.americanum "Robustum" which is probably erubescens, since it is more robust and can thrive in a wider range of growing conditions. A miniature strain of americanum is Oliganthum (also West Indies Mini or Carribeum). GROWING CONDITIONS: As noted, C. americanum will grow in ordinary garden soil, but to bloom it needs very wet conditions. We grow most of ours in pots with saucers full of water under them, in large black motar mixing tubs without drain holes, or in our ponds. The blooms will last longer if plants are grown in partial to full shade. It will flower from June until frost. New plants growing from seeds can rot if kept too wet during the winter. This is a perfect container plant for a large tub because of the runner roots and it's ability to grow in very wet, poor draining soil. This is a very hardy and easy to grow bulb requiring no special care. It tolerates a wide range of soils, extended dry periods, and will tolerate freezing weather to zone 7. Bulbs can survive nicely out of the ground for very extended periods if allowed to dry. DESCRIPTION OF ITEM FOR BID: You are bidding on a large, blooming-size bulb about 1 inch in diameter, with leaves and at least 4 years old, which should bloom within 1 year. Crinum do not like being disturbed, so it could take one year to "settle in." Bulbs will be freshly dug, shipped bare root and with leaves March-November. In the winter months the leaves may be absent. WE SIZE OUR BULBS APPROXIMATELY BY AGE AS FOLLOWS: A few varieties can take 6 years or more to bloom.
