Cobaea scandens is a herbaceous perennial vine is in the Polemoniaceae family. Its native range is Mexico. Familiar names include Cobaea Species, Cathedral Bells, Cup, and Saucer Vine, and Purple Jedra. This self-clinging climber with tendrils was noted in Darwin's observations that the Cobaea grew faster and more robust than almost all vines he observed. It has gained the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit. It does very well grown under glass with heat. It can grow to around 4-8 feet long with 4 inch leaves and tendrils with small hooks for climbing. The large forward-facing flowers are deep violet and pollinated by bats in nature. They are bell-shaped with a large ruff for the saucer part. In bloom from late summer until early fall. The flowers are scented once they grow into maturity. It grows best in full sun with an average water need. Zones 9-10 Germination Sow seeds on top of the soil and lightly tamp down and cover. Keep moist in a bright spot. Do not cover with plastic, and keep temperatures around 70-75F. Germination is in 6-30 days.
