Familiar names include Mountain Bluet, Mountain Cornflower, Perennial Cornflower, and Montane Knapweed. A wonderful-smelling flower with a sunflower look, but it is a perennial. It grows in open woodlands and meadows and will re-seed easily. It can grow to around 2 feet tall from a clump-forming root system. The gray-green leaves are lanceolate, about 5-7 inches long. The blue-purple scented flowers are 2 inches across and fringed. The center is blue with black-edged bracts. It can grow in full sun to part shade with an average water need. Birds, bees, and butterflies will visit it. Zones 3-8GerminationSow seeds 1/4", tamp down, and lightly cover. Keep moist in a bright spot.
