A native to the Sierra Nevada foothills. It is the sole species in the Genus Carpentaria. In the same family as Hydrangea's and closely related to Philadelphus (Mock Orange). It can grow to 10 feet tall and 6 feet wide in full sun. The leaves are a glossy blue-green on top and have a whitish color on the bottom. Flowering in late spring until mid-summer with sweet-smelling white flowers that are 3 inches across. They come in clusters with the flowers having 5-8 petals per flower and in the center a yellow ring of yellow stamens. The bark is flaky once the stems mature. A rare species that is endemic to sites in Fresno and Madera Counties. Well adapted to wildfires by reproducing from stump sprouts after naturally burning. Finding a natural seedling is rare. Seeds are tiny. Zones 8-9 Germination Sow seeds the thickness of the seeds on top of the medium and lightly cover. Keep moist in a bright spot. Do not cover and keep temperatures around 65-75F. Germination is in 7-30 days.
