With proper care, a bird of paradise can grow to over six feet tall, even indoors. Its broad, arching leaves make a dramatic, graceful statement in your home. Many often mistakenly call this plant the “banana tree” because it looks like banana plants. These regal plants (for which they are named, reginae) are named for the beautiful, orange crane-like flowers that they produce, like birds of paradise. Under the right conditions, including full, southern light exposure, proper humidity and temperature, Bird of Paradise may flower indoors, although this is rare.Flower production is much more frequent when a Bird of Paradise is used as an outdoor plant. LIGHT: A Bird of Paradise plant requires very bright light. This plant can even be placed in the direct sun if you do it gradually and allow the leaves to slowly adapt. You may have to move a Bird of Paradise plant to different areas of your home as the seasons change in order to give it adequate light; placing it close to a south- facing window is always best.WATER: In the spring and summer keep the soil moist but never soggy. A Bird of Paradise plant needs less water in the fall and winter. Water from the bottom so the soil stays loose and remains well aerated. Water that has a high salt content burns the leaves.FERTILIZER: Feed monthly in the spring and summer when a Bird of Paradise is actively growing; use a balanced plant food diluted to 1/2 the recommended strength. Never fertilize a Bird of Paradise plant in the fall and winter when it is resting. Excess plant food deposits salts in the soil and these salts cause leaf tip burn.TEMPERATURE: An indoor Bird of Paradise plant grows best in temperatures between 60°-80° during the spring, summer, and fall. In the winter, when the plant is "resting," keep the temperature 10° cooler. Temperatures below 30°F cause the leaves on a Bird of Paradise to curl and turn black.PESTS: A Bird of Paradise is susceptible to scale, Mealy Bugs, and spider mites. Fortunately, these plant pests are quickly detected on the large broad leaves and easily wiped off with a soft cloth or warm soapy water.
