Beaucarnea recurvata is an evergreen tree or tropical perennial in the Asparagaceae family. Its native range is in southeastern Mexico, Belize, and Guatemala. Familiar names include Bottle Palm, Elephant's Foot, and Ponytail Palm. Beaucarnea recurvata is not a palm in the Arecaceae family but has become a popular ornamental container plant. They can live to be over 350 years old. Its habitat is in low deciduous forests, growing on rocky slopes and cliffs. It has gained the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit. A relatively slow grower can reach 15-20 feet tall in a tropical setting but will only get 6-8 feet tall and 3-5 feet wide inside in a container. The caudex or trunk can store water and provide life for branches to emerge. The caudex can get to be 5 feet in diameter or more. The leaves reach out to 6 feet long and 1 inch wide. The flowers will bloom from older species and are creamy white. Most indoor plants will not produce flowers. It prefers to grow in full sun and is drought tolerant.
