Allium sphaerocephalon is a hardy perennial in the Alliaceae family. It is commonly known as Round-headed leek, Round-headed garlic, and Ball-head Onion. It is native to Europe in the Netherlands, Scandinavia, the Baltic States, Ireland, Africa, Asia, and Iran. It is in flower from July to August. It grows to heights of 3 feet tall and a foot wide. It has a bulb around a foot long that is egg-shaped. The plant is self-fertile and is noted for attracting wildlife such as bees, butterflies, and birds. It prefers dry or moist soil but can tolerate drought. It likes to grow in full sun to part shade. Hardiness Zone 4-8 Germination Mix seeds and soil together in a ziplock bag. Write the name of the seed on the bag. Place in the refrigerator for 60 days. Seed should be sown into well-drained, sandy compost and covered to their own depth with sand or grit. Place the seed tray in filtered light and keep moist. Seeds germinate very slowly and may take more than a year to germinate.
