Test Turks Turban Winter Squash Check out our other listings! Turks Turban, also called Mexican Hat, is an open-pollinated squash variety that has been in cultivation since before the 1820s. Highly productive vines produce turban-shaped fruits that grow up to 12 inches in diameter and an average weight of 5 pounds. Distinctive, bright orange skin streaked with greens, reds, and whites make for a stunning addition to fall displays. The fruit's thick flesh is mildly sweet and excellent for baking or stuffing. 100 days to maturity. Turks Turban Germination Guide Direct sow. Like other Cucurbits, Turks Turban does best when planted directly in the ground. Aim to sow the seeds when the soil temperature is above 55°F. Select a planting site. Choose a spot that will get full sun with some afternoon shade, and be sure the area you select offers plenty of room for the squash's vines to grow. If space is limited plant at the edge of garden and train the vines to grow across your lawn. Prepare the planting site. Make sure the soil is nutrient rich and well-drained. Consider mixing aged manure and/or compost into the soil prior to planting. Sow seeds in rows or on small mounds known as 'hills". Hills are best as the soil tends to warm more rapidly, helping to speed up germination. This also helps with water drainage and pest control. If using hills, plant the seeds 1 inch deep into the hills, 3 to 6 seeds per hill in hills that are 4 to 8 feet apart. When the plants grow to about 2 or 3 inches in height, you can thin to 2 to 3 plants per hill by carefully snipping off the weaker, unwanted plants while taking care not to disturb the roots of the remaining ones. If using rows, sow seeds 8 to 24 inches apart in rows that are 6 feet apart. Water often during germination. Be sure to keep the soil moist but not oversatured. Seedlings should emerge in about 7 to 12 days if soil temperatures remain consistently warm.
