Tobacco Brush, also known as Snowbrush Ceanothus, is an evergreen shrub native to the western United States, where it can often be found growing in open, wooded hillsides and ledges. Plant grows to around 3 to 10 feet in height and produces clusters of white flowers that attract bees, butterflies, and other beneficial pollinators. All parts of the plant are wonderfully fragrant, with a scent similar to tobacco, cinnamon, and balsam, and be crushed and mixed with water to produce a natural a soap. Extremely hardy and drought tolerant. Soak seeds in hot tap water for 24 hours (scarification), then cold stratify for 60 to 90 days. When seeds are ready, direct sow in fall to late winter by planting seeds 1/4 inch deep in a location that receives full sun to partial shade. Typically blooms in early summer.
