Plant seeds 1/4 to 1/2 inch deep. Make sure you plant three seeds every 12 to 18 inches. Sow seeds in early spring or late summer. In Mediterranean climates, this means March or April for spring crops and August or September for fall crops. Sow new rows of choy sum every two or three weeks so that you’ll have a consistent supply during the cooler months. Set shade cloth over rows sown in late spring. Thin the choy sum seedlings to 12 to 18 inches apart from one another in all directions. Make sure seedlings are protected from wind, heat and drought. Water the choy sum patch at least once a week, checking during the week to ensure that the soil remains moist. Give the patch supplemental watering during dry spells. Avoid wetting foliage when watering the soil around choy sum. Also, refrain from using sprinklers or watering at the end of the day when the leaves won’t have the chance to dry in the sun. Sprinklers or careless watering methods can lead to fungal diseases. Side-dress plants with compost three weeks after sowing seeds. Set compost in rings around individual plants, or in narrow bands several inches in front of each row. In either case, use a 1-inch layer of compost. Cover plants with shade cloth in the afternoon during heat spells. As a cool-season vegetable, choy sum prefers temperatures between 60 to 70 degrees Fahrenheit. Harvest choy sum by cutting off the entire loose bunch of leaf stalks at the base of the plant when it reaches the large leaf stage but before its yellow flower buds have flowered. Fruits have a striking appearance with shiny purple skin that becomes lighter (and sometimes white) towards the calyx. This is a very productive variety with tall, upright plants that provide heavy yields. Plants will produce in late spring/early summer and continue production throughout summer and into fall. Purple Shine fruits have an elongated shape and are usually 9-12″ long with a 1-2″ diameter. Purple Shine Eggplant is a great variety for making small slices for sautéing or frying. Eggplant is in the nightshade family along with tomatoes and peppers. Plants in the nightshade family are susceptible to blossom end rot, which is a result of a calcium deficiency. To prevent or alleviate this problem, apply pelleted gypsum at the base of the plant at bloom set. Eggplant does best when transplanted, as the germination time can be longer than most vegetable seed. Eggplants produce heavy fruits and will require some form of support to keep the plant upright. We recommend using the Florida Weave trellising technique that involves using stakes and twine along the row. This ensures that plants and fruits stay off the ground, reducing the possibility of disease and keeping fruits clean. Gardening for happiness! Treevale
