Toothache Plant is a medicinal herb that’s been used for generations to manage the pain of toothaches. Both the leaves and the attractive golden flowers can be used as a natural anesthetic. Simply chew the leaves or flowers for a few seconds then you’ll experience a tingling and numbing sensation in your mouth that is said to work better than many commercial products. An infusion or tincture made from the Toothache Plant is said to promote gum and throat health due to its strong antibacterial properties. Also called Spilanthes oleracea. Culinary Uses:The fresh, young leaves can be cooked like spinach and are used as salad greens – small amounts of chopped fresh leaves will add a unique flavor to salads. It can also be added to soups and stews and both fresh and cooked leaves are combined with chili and garlic to add flavor to dishes such as stews. Medicinal Properties:In Brazil spilanthes is commonly referred to as the toothache plant for its ability to numb the gums and mouth and calm tooth pain when the flower buds and new leaves are chewed. Spilanthes works in a similar fashion to echinacea in treating painful canker sores. Spilanthes has antibacterial and antifungal properties making it a good purifying herb used for disinfecting wounds and curing ringworm infections. Spilanthes is also used as an antiparasitic and native remedy against malaria in the tropics. More study is needed on the medicinal uses of spilanthes before we understand the full extent of its uses. Planting Instructions:In areas of frost, grow Toothache Plant seeds as annuals. It prefers full sun or partial shade. Start the herb seeds indoors 4 to 6 weeks before the last expected frost date. Transplant the young plants outside into a prepared site that has had organic compost worked in. Wait until frost danger has passed to plant outside. Once the young Para Cress plants have several sets of mature leaves, pinch back the stems to encourage a more bushy and compact growth.
