Giant N-Efficiency, Nitrogen-Fixing corn is a very special, and unusual variety of maize that comes in a variety of colors. There are about 40 varieties of this type of corn, and all members of this group are believed to have originated from a particular variety from Guatemala. Over the centuries Guatemalan seeds were traded north into Mexico and further south into Central and South America by the many indigenous groups. The corn crossed with other landrace varieties and many related nitrogen-fixing varieties developed over time. These varieties of corn have been grown in Mesoamerica by the indigenous people for many centuries. While many of these varieties are grown in mountain regions, some are adapted to lowlands as well. The actual corn kernels can come in a variety of colors, ranging from white, red, pink, yellow, purple, blue, and colors in between. Our variety mix is primarily white, with a few blue/purple, yellow, and/or red/rose-colored kernels, depending on the several varieties in stock at the time of shipping. The corn is eaten as corn-on-the-cob while still tender, or dry as a grain for making posole, atole, or masa for tortillas and other dishes. The tall stalks are used as forage for livestock and as fuel for cooking. This corn grows in poor soils with little to no additional fertilizer, but yet can still grow to 18+ feet tall! It actually captures atmospheric nitrogen, an essential nutrient that the plants needs, from the air!Research has shown that the less fertilizer that is applied to the maize, the more nitrogen it will scavenge from the soil and air via bacterial symbiosis. So it actually grows better with little to no applied nitrogen fertilizer. These landrace varieties of corn produce aerial roots along their stalks that exude a thick mucus-like gel substance that harbors beneficial bacteria that capture and fix the atmospheric nitrogen into a form that the corn plant can absorb and utilize. The gel production is more pronounced during periods of high humidity or fog, along with cooler temperatures. In 1983 a colleague isolated a strain of bacteria from the roots of the corn. This symbiotic relationship between the corn plant and the bacteria is similar in function to how legumes have root-dwelling bacteria that perform a comparable job for members of the bean-plant family. This interesting genetic trait is believed to have been inherited by the nitrogen-fixing maize from its wild ancestor, the Teosinte, which also has the same nitrogen-fixing trait. Wherever the nitrogen-fixing varieties of maize are grown, farmers also plant Teosinte along with the maize and any other varieties of corn to improve their production. You will receive 50+ Giant N-Efficiency, Nitrogen-Fixing, Maize seeds plus a FREE packet of 10 seeds of Teosinte seeds with growing instructions. Since Teosinte is a direct relative of modern corn, the plant looks very much like a corn plant. It grows tall like corn, except that, unlike corn, it has branches and produces side-shoots (tillers) and becomes bushy. Due to its branching habit, it produces many small single-row ears called spikelets, with each spikelet having 4-12 seeds or kernels. Just like corn/maize, Teosinte was considered sacred by the ancient people of the Americas. In fact the name Teosinte is from the Nahuatl (Aztec) language Teosintli, meaning Sacred Corn. One of the first and main uses of Teosinte by the Pre-Columbian People was that of a source of sugar from the sweet stalks and the tender, immature spikelets. These were cooked and ground into a mash which was then fermented into a type of pulque which was then consumed during religious and ceremonial rituals.Teosinte has a unique feature in that it captures atmospheric nitrogen via aerial roots that it produces along its stalk. This means that it never needs fertilizer and it actually improves the soil fertility where it grows. Its evolutionary cousins, the many varied strains (actually close to 40) of nitrogen-fixing landrace maize, also produce their own fertilizer via a similar system of aerial roots and a symbiotic relationship with certain microbe species. Check out our listing for Giant N-efficiency Nitrogen-Fixing Maize Corn Seed Mix on eBay! In south-central Mexico, where Teosinte is native, indigenous farmers will plant or allow wild Teosinte to grow along with their maize in their corn fields. They believe it will make their corn plants stronger and more productive. The dry seeds are used as a feed for pigs and poultry by the native people of southern Mexico. The stalks are sweet and can be chewed like sweet sorghum or sugarcane stalks. Teosinte is also an excellent food plot for wildlife. Birds love these seeds, especially doves, quail, turkey, and many other species. You can plant a few seeds along your fence line to attract wildlife. We also recommend planting some Marejea-Chipilin along with the Teosinte to increase productivity, growth, and yields.(Please note some of the photos were taken by Verne Lehmberg and used by permission) Complete growing instructions included!!
