Unlike redbuds, their rosy pink blooms burst out in the spring at the same time as their new bronzy leaves emerge… and the deciduous leaves are pinnate and feathery, going brilliant yellow in the fall. The blossoms quickly give way to green then brown, leathery tri-lobed fruit (or seed pods) that hang on through the winter. The large, beautiful, shiny black seeds are about 1/2” to 5/8” in diameter. They have been used by children as marbles and drilled to be used as beads and buttons. Evidence of their use by the indigenous peoples of northern Mexico dates back 8000 years.
