DESCRIPTION: Southern Belle is a bulb that we were seeking for many years and finally obtained. The beautiful white, star-shaped flowers have a wide, red stripe running down each tepal/sepal, and it grows into a very compact plant which will produce a high number of new offset bulbs once it is mature. All of these baconi type hybrids that we grow are particularly striking for their beauty because of the dark red buds and stripes. It has a strong scape, great color and makes an excellent selection for a container or near a front border of a flower bed as it does not take up a lot of space or get very large. We have recorded as many as 5 flowers on scapes as tall as 28″. Our largest bulb is only about 2 1/2 – 3″ in diameter. We have not found it to be fertile, so it won’t form seeds. We have recorded blooms from June through November here in zone 9, northeast Florida. They are VERY fragrant. They will form beautiful clumps if left undisturbed for many years. These plants have more erect leaves and a small clump of bulbs only takes up about one square foot, much less than most crinum. We are offering this for the first time on EBay in December 2018. We grow over 1000 different crinum including about 350 of our own hybrids. BACKGROUND: Southern Belle is a hybrid (baconii type c. zeylanicum x c. americanum/erubescens) This bulb was obtained in a trade with another collector in 2010. Maurine Spinks, Fourth of July, and Belle of Seville are three other baconi type hybrids that we have for sale. GROWING CONDITIONS: This is a semi-hardy and easy to grow bulb requiring no special care. It is a bit more tender than many crinum and should do fine outside to at least zone 7+ or 8. It tolerates a wide range of soils. They typically bloom in the second half of the summer opening in the early evening and you can smell them just walking nearby. They should do best planted in the ground in full sun or partial shade, but they will also make excellent container plants. They can survive nicely out of the ground for very extended periods if allowed to dry. DESCRIPTION OF ITEM FOR BID: You are bidding on a small-size, 1+ year old bulb about 1/2″ in diameter which should bloom in about 2-3 years. Bulbs will be freshly dug, shipped bare root and with leaves March-November. In the winter months the leaves may be absent. WE SIZE OUR BULBS APPROXIMATELY BY AGE AS FOLLOWS: A few varieties can take 6 years or more to bloom. Jumbo bulb – has bloomed at least 2 years, close to the maximum size for that particular plant (6+ years old) Large bulb – should bloom this year or next (3+ years old, close to, or at blooming size) Medium bulb – should bloom in 1-2 years (at least 2 years old) Small bulb – should bloom 2-4 years (current year or 1-2 year old offset) Seedling bulb – started from seed (usually in its first year of growth unless otherwise stated) PHOTOS/ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: These are pictures of our plants, so you know exactly what they look like and what you will receive.
