This native perennial 2-3′ wildflower is hardy in zones 5-9. The preference is full or partial sun in moist to slightly dry soil. The soil can contain large amounts of loam, clay-loam, or rocky material. Royal Catchfly is fairly easy to grow, but it is somewhat slower to develop than other plants and resents excessive shading. During drought, the lower leaves may turn yellow and fall off the plant. Plants begin to bloom while small in size, but it takes several years to reach their full potential. It lasts just one year but readily self-seeds to germinate new plants each spring. Anecdotally, it is said that the leaves and stems are so sticky they could catch a fly; but the sticky stems actually discourage ants and other small insects from snacking on the plant.

Royal Catchfly Seeds (Silene Regia)
Royal Catchfly is a perennial flower to zones 3-9. It grows 3 1/2 to 4 feet tall. It develops bright red flowers that bloom July through August. It is called catch fly because little gnats and flies get stuck on the sticky seed pods behind the flower. Hummingbirds and butterflies are attracted to it. The seeds need 2 months of cold refrigeration to break dormancy. Best if planted outside in the fall or very early spring. It may take several years to reach its full potential. Sow the seeds on the surface of the soil and keep moist. Plant in full sun. Mature plants may need to be staked, as they grow quite tall. 15 seeds per pkt.
