It is similar to Delonix decaryi and often confused to be the same. It appears the only noticeable difference is the seed and shape of the trunk.It is a semi-deciduous tree with a spherical crown, growing to a height of 6-12 meters with drooping branches. Bark is ash grey and smooth. The leaves are alternate, bipinnate. Flowers are white to cream colored in the beginning, turning yellow with age. The upper petal is smaller and darker in color, almost circular, curled at the margins, 2.5 cm long. Long stamens are dark, hairy and provide a wonderful contrast in color.It has several medicinal uses and does have reports of antioxidant, anti-arthritic, anti-ulcer and anti-inflammatory activity. There are some good reasons to choose strawberry guava plants over the common guava, including more attractive fruit and foliage, and a better tasting tropical fruit. 10 WATER OAK ACORNS – Quercus nigra Seed Plant Craft

Quercus nigra, commonly called Water oak or possum oak, is a medium sized deciduous (sometimes semi-evergreen in southern areas) oak of the red oak group that typically grows in a conical form to 50-80’ tall with a broad rounded crown. Trunk diameter extends to 3.5’. Brownish gray bark becomes grayish black with age with rough scaly ridging. Water oak is native primarily from New Jersey to Florida and Texas, extending northward along the Mississippi River valley to western Kentucky, southern Illinois and Missouri. It is typically found in low woodland areas, floodplains and along streams and rivers. Insignificant monoecious flowers in separate male and female catkins appear in spring. Fruits are broad-rounded acorns (to 1/2” long) in short-stalked cups with woolly scales. Acorns are a source of food for wildlife. Narrow, smooth-margined, spatula-shaped, oblong leaves (2-4” long and 1-2” wide) are three-lobed to entire at the tips. Leaves are dull bluish-green above and paler with pubescence beneath. Old leaves tend to drop in late fall to early winter, but may persist on the tree throughout most of the winter in the southern parts of the growing range (particularly within USDA Zones 8-9). A medium oak for moist areas or lowspots. Has been used as a street tree and shade tree, particularly in southern towns and cities. Growing Instructions The seeds have only a mild dormancy and can be planted without a stratification period. 1. Put a mixture of potting soil and sand, perlite or vermiculite in a pot. Use pots with a drainage hole in the base. 2. Sow the seeds on the soil. 3. Cover the seeds with a thin layer of soil. 4. Water the seeds. Keep the soil moist but not wet. 5. When the seedlings are a few inches tall, they can be transplanted.

Desert Willow Tree Chilopsis linearis seeds – xeriscape for arid & semi-arid

This is for seeds of the Desert Willow tree, scientifically known as Chilopsis linearis, part of the Bignoniaceae family, not actually a willow. This small perennial tree is perfect for xeriscaping (gardens that do not require water) in arid and semi-arid areas or in Mediterranean style climates. Being a native to the American southwestern deserts, it is extremely drought-tolerant, so much so that it actually does poorly in humid climates. It is a large shrub or small multi-trunked tree with a loose open crown that typically grows to 15-25′ tall with a spread to 10-15′. It is also fast-growing, deciduous, and it produces beautiful tropical-looking trumpet-shaped two-tone pink flowers. Approximately 80 highly viable seeds (0.5 g). Chilopsis linearis is reported to have a germination rate of about 40%. These germinated at 60% without treatment, and I got 73% germination within two weeks when I tried the leaching method (repeatedly rinsing with water over a couple of days to simulate rain water – do not attempt this without researching how to do it!!). Cold stratification is another recommended treatment which I am testing now and will report the results later.
