Artemisia frigida is a perennial in the Asteraceae family. Its native range is from eastern Europe to Asia and North America. Some familar names include Fringed Sagewort, Pasture Sage, Prairie Sage, and arctic sage. It is a favorite plant for many wild animals such as the sage grouse and the white-tailed jackrabbit. It is cultivated for its foliage and, it has gained the Royal Horticultural Society’s Award of Garden Merit. It has been used by indigenous people for medicinal purposes. It can grow to around 1-2 feet tall in a woody clump-forming around a foot wide. The aromatic leaves densely cover the stems and branches and are coated with tiny silver hairs. On an inflorescence, many flowers are born in a creamy white color with gray-green phyllaries. It prefers to grow in full sun to part shade with little to average water needs. Zones 3-10 Germination Mix equal parts of potting soil, vermiculite, and peat moss. Spread seeds on top of the potting media. Press seeds down into the media. Mist with a spray bottle. Uncover and mist as needed to keep the media moist. Cover the seed tray with clear plastic to maintain a 75F. Place under a bright light until germination.
