Its native range is in Wyoming, Utah, Colorado, New Mexico, and Arizona. Common names include Bigelow’s Tansyaster, Purple Tansy Aster, and Wild Aster. They grow naturally in the plains along roadsides in conifer forests and can cover an entire bank with purple. The flowers come out in late summer with lavender-purple rays that surround a yellow disc in the middle. In the afternoon, the rays will fold up into a sleep position. It can grow to a few feet tall and a little more than a foot wide. The leaves are narrow and oblong up to three inches long, with teeth along the margins. It is in bloom from August until October. It can grow in part shade as well as full sun. It has average water needs and well-drained soil. Zones 5-10 Germination Mix seeds and moistened soil together in a ziplock bag. Write the name on the bag. Place in the refrigerator for 60 days. Sow seeds into a well-drained, sandy compost and 1/4″ deep with sand or grit. Place the seed tray in bright light and keep moist.
