Some Growing Tips:  – Direct sowing after last frost, or start seeds indoor three weeks before the last frost. Soak the seeds overnight first.  If indoor temperature is 70F or higher, seeds should germinate within 2 weeks.  I use heating mat and grow light to speed up germination and ensure healthy seedling growth. – Prefer full sun; fertile well drained soil; space seedlings 6-12″ apart; rows 3' apart.  Or space them out  in small hills/mounds, each hill should be 18″ wide and 12″ deep, with four seedlings planted per hill.  You can also sow 8-12 seeds per hill and thin them out later.  Crowded vines actually yield lesser harvest. – The vine is vigorous and needs to be supported via fence, trellis, arbor, teepee, meshed wire, cattle panel..etc.  One year I had few vines climbed up the Dawn Redwood tree and the tree is dotted with hyacinth bean flowers even at 12' tree top level. – Pods harvest begin about 75 days after transplant.  A popular recipe is riblet stew, add hyacinth beans later and simmer it for 20 minutes.

Fall/Winter is the best time to plant these beautiful bulbs (peudo rhizomes) in your garden for spring flowers.  They will winter in the ground and the leaves will turn brown and fall off. The main stem will brown up and die as well. The bulbs will produce new shoots and leaves in the spring where the flower stems will come out of,  With some care, every year, they will keep multiplying via rhizomes and fill-in section of the garden. Once established, they are virtually maintenance free! See photos.  They are the hardiest and easiest to care orchids – low to no maintenance once established. They prefer shade to partial shade. they did fine in full sun but required more watering. Grows in zone 5-9 but should mulch heavy in cold zone 5 to prevent freezing.  You will receive 2 plants (peudo-rhizome bulbs) each have 1-2 shoots with moistened soil in secured in a plastic bag. Stems are  trimmed to 10-12 inches for shipping but this is not critical to the plant as they going into dormancy for the winter – the stems will eventually turn brown and wither. New shoots/leaves will come out in the spring time and flowers will come from there.  Dig a 6 inch deep hole and bury them into the ground as soon as you received them. The roots are drying up and going dormant for the winter. It's almost like bareroot. Water them normally and allow soil to dry between watering. The stem will be protected in bubble wrap to reduce water loss and leaves trimmed back to about 10-12 inch for shipping purposes. Please expect the plant to loose ALL of it's leaves after planting and stem to turn brown and wither because it's wintering. It’s like a semi bare root or bulbs right now. The roots are drying up and going into dormancy for the winter. New leaves will come from the new shoots and not from the old stem, in the spring time!! This plant can be planted indoors but it's been grown outdoors in southern CA. One care instructions included in each order. I love this plant because it’s so easy to care for and a ferocious grower to fill in bare sections of my garden in a few years!  Rhizomes have medicinal properties. Thank you for looking 👀!
