Native American Persimmon Tree Seeds. The American Persimmon or Diospyros virginiana is native to North America and ranges from Connecticut to Florida and all over the Midwest. It is a member of the Ebony Family. Highly favored by American Indians and settlers in Colonial times it was eaten fresh or dried and cooked into pudding, custard and bread.The flavor is rich deep and complex. A ripe Persimmon has a taste like caramel with hints of tangerine and heavy cream. The texture is like dense rich custard.The American Persimmon is an ornamental tree with intensely green leathery leaves that turn purple in Fall. Yellowish white flowers appear in Spring followed by yellowish orange to red slightly flattened 1.5 to 2 inch fruit which stay on the tree into Winter.
