VERBENA bonariensis PURPLETOP VERVAIN Tender Perennial Purple Non-GMO 500 Seeds!

Verbena bonariensis Tall Purple Wildflower Fall Planting Butterflies Non-GMO 500 SeedsPlant a wildflower meadow!PLANT INFORMATION Verbena bonariensis works well in a number of garden settings, such as cottage and contemporary gardens, due to its height and airy appearance. It’s also beneficial for attracting wildlife, particularly butterflies. Verbena (Verbena Bonariensis) – Commonly called Purpletop Vervain, this is one of the best flowering perennials for attracting butterflies, and in particular the Tiger Swallowtail. 80% of seeds are dormant when shipped and need cold stratification to bloom the following year. You will be rewarded with tons of blooms, pollinators, hummingbirds and butterflies! This plant will draw bees, hummingbird moths, butterflies and more – such a pollinator favorite! Blooms early and if you cut it down to about a foot mid-season it will continue to bloom into frost then crumble up the seeds and it will bloom in spring Bright lavender pompons for quick, easy color! A species Verbena, this tender perennial offers months of garden color both from the big blooms and from the finely-cut dark green foliage. Good tolerance of heat and drought means even longer, more perfect bloom. Even though it tolerates dry soils, it really loves moist to wet conditions. And when it finds a place it likes, it self-sows freely! Grown as an annual north of its hardiness range, V. bonariensis is a staple of the cottage garden, cutting garden, and meadow. It tolerates poor soils beautifully, asking only for good drainage and plenty of sunshine. The ideal addition to a wildflower garden! Perennial in zones 7-10. About Verbena: Pronunciation: ver-be’nå Lifecycle: Perennial/Annual Origination: Verbenaceae; nativity in text below Common Name: Vervain Verbena Germination Information Verbena seed germination can take as little as 20 days or up to a month or more and, in most cases, requires cold stratification in order to be successful. See Cold stratification instructions below. Verbena is the botanical name for Vervain How to Sow Verbena: Sow indoors, 12-14 weeks before last frost, at a temperature of 70-75° Expect germination in 20-25 days As darkness is necessary for germination, sow seeds at a depth of 4 times the size of the seeds or cover the seed flat with black plastic Remove the cover at first sign of germination. Seedlings are subject to damping off When sowing seed outdoors, we recommend a maximum planting depth of 4X the width of the seed How to Grow Verbena: Transplanting: Transplant when there are at least two sets of true leaves Spacing: Space 12 inches apart in full sun Soil: Site in a light, rich, well-drained soil. Allow the soil to dry out between waterings Temperature: Site in full sun, provide 55° nights Additional Care: As a group they are very tolerant of drought, exposure, wind, heat, humidity, and pollution. The perennial types can get straggly, so cut back hard in early spring or resow seeds each year. · HOW TO COLD STRATIFY SEEDS· · Everyone wants plants. Now. But there are a small group of seeds that require a special treatment before they will even germinate in a climate that has temperatures below freezing. This process is called “Cold Stratification.” There are two ways to accomplish this.· Fall Planting If time is not a problem, you can put them in the ground in fall and let them go through a winter. They will sprout next year, but not flower. The following year, having gone through two winters, they will return and bloom as expected.· If you are planting poppies direct sowing is recommended in late fall or early spring for zones 2-8· Create a “False Winter” The second way to do this, if you want to save time, is to create a “false winter.” What this does is trick the seeds into thinking they have been in the ground for an entire year. All they need is to be in your refrigerator for at least 2 ½ months.· About 3 months before spring, place seeds in a plastic bag with a handful of slightly dampened, clean peat, paper towel, or a mix of clean peat and sand. Seal and label the bag with seed name and date, then store in the refrigerator (not freezer) for at least 2½ mos. before planting in spring. (The cold period mimics a full winter’s cold.) Once your seed has been treated, it’s ready to plant when spring arrives. SEED STORING Store your seeds in a cool, dry and dark location. Most seeds have a long shelf life, but heat and moisture will cut that life short. Dedicate a drawer or cabinet to storing your seeds where you can also house your gardening journal close at hand for dreaming, planning and preparing. WE SHIP FAST & FREE! There are over 700 species of this plant that originated in warm and temperate climates. There are annual and perennial varieties aplenty. Spiky flowers are borne on bushy plants. Sizes generally range from 10″ to 60″, with most varieties below 36″. You most likely know, and readily recognize, the bright red and scarlet Salvia. But, the flowers are also found in most colors, including blue. How to Sow and Plant Salvia Salvia may be grown from seed sown early indoors and transplanted outside after frost, sown directly in the garden in summer, or grown from potted plants. Sowing Salvia Seeds Indoors · Sow indoors 10-12 weeks before the last frost. · Barely press the seeds into seed starting formula. · Keep the soil evenly moist at 70 degrees F. · Seedlings emerge in 15-21 days. · As soon as seedlings emerge, provide plenty of light on a sunny windowsill or grow seedlings 3-4 inches beneath fluorescent plant lights turned on 16 hours per day, off for 8 hours at night. Raise the lights as the plants grow taller. Incandescent bulbs will not work for this process because they will get too hot. Most plants require a dark period to grow, do not leave lights on for 24 hours. · Seedlings do not need much fertilizer, feed when they are 3-4 weeks old using a starter solution (half strength of a complete indoor houseplant food) according to manufacturer’s directions. · If you are growing salvia in small cells, you may need to transplant the seedlings to 3 or 4 inch pots when seedlings have at least 2 pairs of true leaves before transplanting to the garden so they have enough room to develop strong roots. · Before planting salvia out in the garden, seedling plants need to be “hardened off”. Accustom young plants to outdoor conditions by moving them to a sheltered place outside for a week. Be sure to protect them from wind and hot sun at first. If frost threatens at night, cover or bring containers indoors, then take them out again in the morning. This hardening off process toughens the plant’s cell structure and reduces transplant shock and scalding. Sowing Salvia Seeds directly in the Garden · Direct sow after all danger of frost in full sun in a well-drained but moisture retentive soil · Remove weeds and work organic matter into the top 6-8 inches of soil; then level and smooth. · Sow seeds evenly and thinly and barely cover with fine soil. · Keep evenly moist. · Seedlings will emerge in 15-21 days. · Thin to 12-18 inches apart when seedlings are about 2 inches tall. How to Grow Salvia Keep weeds under control during the salvia growing season. Weeds compete with plants for water, space and nutrients, so control them by either cultivating often or use a mulch to prevent their germination. · Mulches also help retain soil moisture and maintain even soil temperatures. For perennials, an organic mulch of aged bark or shredded leaves lends a natural look to the bed and will improve the soil as it breaks down in time. Always keep mulches off a plant’s stems to prevent possible rot. · Careful watering is essential in getting salvia perennials off to a good start. Water thoroughly at least once a week to help new roots grow down deeply. Soil should be damp at about 1 inch below the soil surface. You can check this by sticking your finger in the soil. Water early in the morning to give all leaves enough time to dry. One inch of rain or watering per week is recommended for most perennial plants. You can check to see if you need to add water by using a rain gauge. · Until plants become established, some protection from extreme winds and direct, hot sunlight may be necessary. Good air movement is also important. · After new growth appears, a light fertilizer may be applied. Keep granular fertilizers away from the plant crown and foliage to avoid burn injury. Use low rates of a slow release fertilizer, as higher rates may encourage root rots. · “Deadhead”, remove spent flower heads to encourage continuous flowering and prevent seed development. · Remove and discard foliage after a hard frost in fall. · In colder regions, apply another layer of mulch (1-2 inches) after the ground freezes in fall. Evergreen boughs (from Christmas trees) provide additional protection. Remove this mulch in the spring.
