Pritchardia thurstonii Lau Fan Palm Native to Fiji, Lau island group, introduced on many pacific islands. This is truly a Beautiful palm. The primary differences, between P pacifica and P thurstonii, are 1) this palm’s flowers extend far beyond the leaves and look like ornaments hanging down from the crowns… while inflorescence of P pacifica are still nestled within the crown of leaves. and 2) this palm is a bit smaller in leaf and trunk size, also a less ‘perfect’ in the size/shape of the leaf. One of the most attractive Pritchardias with a trunk up to 12 inches in diameter, Pritchardia thurstonii is similar to but smaller than the common Fiji Fan Palm. P. thurstonii is the hard to hard dwarf version of these attractive, solitary fan palms. P. thurstonii is highly sought after by discriminating collectors. Typically found in habitat, tropical dry forests with mean monthly temperatures ranging from 22C in July to 28C in January. Rainfall averages 1800 mm per year with most falling during December-April summer and almost drought conditions prevailing during the cooler months. This attractive, solitary fan palm 15-30 feet tall, is smaller than the common Fiji Fan Palm. Leaves up to 8 feet long and almost as wide, the leaf blade is the same glabrous dull green on both upper and lower surfaces, without any scales or spots underneath. The long stemmed inflorescence is up to 3 meters in length. The spherical fruit is smaller, 8-10 mm in diameter, turning red then black at maturity. The seed is 5mm in diameter about half the size of the common variety. Culture: Fresh seed germinates within 30 days. Plant in a sunny, moist, but well drained position. Prefers tropical conditions, will not grow in temperate climates and is marginal where winter temperatures go below 5C. Slow growing. Well suited to coastal areas. A feature of this solitary palm are the large fan-shaped leaves up to 2 m wide and deeply pleated. Unlike many other fan palms there are no spines along the petioles Seeds are round and .25 inches in size. Smallest of the two Fijian species of Pritchardia thurstonii is a handsome palm. Pritchardia thurstonii prefers full sun but will tolerate partial shade on any well-drained soil. Inflorescence: Long Stem Branched, born in the crownshaft. One of only 3 species with inflorescence greatly exceeding the crown. If you want one of this and one of that, it is hard to discount much as each different species requires it’s own prep, packing, then at USDA each has to be unwrapped and inspected then repacked. USDA requires me to clean and prepare every last piece before we drive them to the Inspection Station on the other side of the island. It takes my wife and I, 2-3 days to pack items and get ready to ship. The whole next day we drive around the island and get inspected (2-3 hours), then drive to the Airport Post Office to drop off.
