The most common member of this family is the morning glory Heavenly Blue, though there are about 300 more plants in this family, including the sweet potato, and many of them are twining climbers. It is a stalwart survivor, prized for its extravagant petals held on branching stems. It easily self sows into moist, fertile, well-drained soils. Columbines start easily from seed and will readily multiply once established. Columbine flower seeds can be directly sown in the garden anytime between early spring and mid-summer. There’s no need to even cover them as long as they receive plenty of light. Seeds planted in late fall will sprout-up in early spring with very early blooms. Spacing for both seeds and plants should be anywhere from 1 to 1 1/2 feet. And the height of the flowering stems are 2 feet to 2 1/2 feet tall. How to Care for Columbine Plant Keep the plants moist following columbine planting until well established. Then only weekly watering is necessary with exception to rare extended periods of drought in which they will require additional watering. Regular deadheading can also be performed to encourage additional blooming. If self-seeding becomes an issue, both the foliage and remaining seedpods can be cut back in the fall. If desired, these plants can also be divided every few years. Our columbine plants have never suffered from any problems, except for too many offspring sprouting up the following year. Pruning columbine plants back to the basal foliage just after blooming can usually help alleviate any problems with overgrowth. Coreopsis grandiflora, The common name Tickseed, is a very self seeding perennial. Needs a sunny spot to really bloom a lot, and you should give it some room, because it tends to sprawl out, in its second year. Culture Easily grown in dry to medium moisture, well-drained soil in full sun. Thrives in poor, sandy or rocky soils with good drainage. Tolerant of heat, humidity and drought. Prompt deadheading of spent flower stalks encourages additional bloom and prevents any unwanted self-seeding. If left untouched it will continuously self seed itself and it may also spread by rhizomes. Plants are sometimes short-lived during harsh freezing winters and in this case it’s self-seeding properties will Guarantee to perpetuate a long-lasting spot with yellow daisy-like flowers in your garden. Plants may be cut back hard in the summer if foliage sprawls out too far. When grown in borders or other formal garden areas, division may be needed every 2-3 years to maintain robustness. Noteworthy Characteristics Coreopsis grandiflora, is native to prairies, glades, open woods, thickets, roadsides and open ground in the southeastern U.S.A, from Florida to Texas and New Mexico north to Georgia, Missouri and Kansas. Through introduction and garden escapes, this coreopsis has become established in the eastern and central U.S. well north of its native range. It typically grows in a clump to 2′ tall. Daisy-like single flowers (2-3″ diameter) feature deep yellow rays (notched at the tips) surrounding a darker golden yellow center disk. Flowers appear singly atop slender, erect stems rising to 2′ tall. Flowers typically bloom from late spring to late summer and sometimes into fall, though bloom period can be much shorter if spent flowers are not regularly deadheaded. Upper leaves are pinnatifid and deeply lobed, but lower leaves at the base of the plant are lobeless and linear. Any Problems No serious insect or disease problems. Foliage is susceptible to powdery mildew, leaf spot and rust. Compact plants are less likely to sprawl than taller varieties of Coreopsis. Crown rot may occur if grown in moist, poorly drained soils. Most of my favorite flowering vines are in the plant family Ipomoea. The most common member of this family is the morning glory Heavenly Blue, though there are about 300 more plants in this family, including the sweet potato, and many of them are twining climbers. As its name suggests, the flowers open in the morning and gradually fades during the evening. They will wrap their vines around anything—wood, wire, string, and even each other. Fittingly, in the language of flowers, they represent bonds and attachments. I love the heart-shaped leaves and sky blue flowers of ‘Heavenly Blue’ but the flowers do start to change to a darker color through the end of the year. And Hummingbirds can’t resist it! All Ipomoeas prefer a sunny location with well-drained soil and tolerate drought. Do not fertilize them, in fact overly fertile soil will promote lush leaf growth instead of flowers.
