Lobelia telekil ‘Mt Kenya’ | Giant Lobelia | 20 Seeds

Lobelia telekii is a perennial in the Campanulaceae family. Its native range is from eastern tropical Africa from Mt. Algon through the Aberdare Range to Mt Kenya. It grows in higher elevations along well-drained hillsides. A semelparous species puts all of its reproductive efforts into producing a large inflorescence 10 feet tall and then dying. It is pollinated by birds like most of the Giant Lobelias. The leaves are in a rosette shape with hairs that come to a point at the end. It prefers higher elevations where it does not freeze or get too hot. The inflorescence reaches 10 feet tall with hundreds of flowers. It prefers to grow in full sun with little water needs. Zones 9-11 Germination Place your seeds and some soil in a ziplock bag. Moisten the mixture enough so it sticks together without water dripping out. Write the name of the seeds on the bag. Place the mixture in your refrigerator for 60 days. Seeds can then be sown into a well-drained, sandy compost and covered lightly with sand or grit. Place the seed tray in a shady corner and keep moist until germination.

Lobelia bambuseti is a small herbaceous tree or palm-like tree in the Asteraceae family. A native to the Kenya mountains around 3000 feet in Africa. It can grow to 25 feet tall. It is unbranched with tongue-like leaves. This Lobelia is slender, unlike the Giant Lobelia. It will prefer foggy, warm temperate climates that do not experience high heat. The pictures may be incorrect but will grow very similar, just more slender and much taller. There are a few pictures at Rare Palm Seeds.  Zones 10-11 Germination Rinse seeds out of the bag on top of the medium and do not cover. Keep moist in a bright spot. Cover with plastic and poke a small hole. Keep temperatures around 70-80F. Germination is in 21-60 days.
