They can grow up to about 3 feet tall and about 4 feet across in the ground, and keep themselves fairly covered in arresting, fragrant, LARGE, absolutely white blooms from early summer until they are knocked down by the first freeze. They hold their beautiful LARGE trumpet blooms very upright….like torches. The buds are 8 to 9 inches long and open to a 4 to 5 in flare. It’s impossible to miss them. I grow them in zone 8b as a perennial….they almost always go dormant—to the ground—every winter and come right back again in the spring. Like their pepper and tomato relatives, they grow SO easily, very fast, and bloom quickly from seed. They will reseed themselves for the next year or you can collect the seed to have on hand just in case a particularly hard winter takes them out completely. They LOVE the sun, tolerate massive heat, require little attention and are water thrifty. So between the different colors of trees and the possibilities of natural cross pollination, there should be a nice palete of colors in the mix. BEAUTIFUL LIGHT FRAGRANCE… BEES & BUTTERFLIES LOVE THEM. Their sheer sturdiness, beautiful flowers and long blooming period make them one of Texas’s best small native trees. Desert willows, so called because of the shape of their leaves are delicate, small deciduous trees native to west Texas and the Edwards Plateau. Once established, they have quite an ability to withstand low rainfall and drought situations. They are also know by the common names Flowering Willow, Willowleaf Catalpa, Desert Catalpa, Flor de Mimbre, Mimbre, and Bow Willow, among others. Their long narrow leaves resemble the leaves of true willows (Salix), but they are not at all related. Flowers grow in showy clusters at the tips of branches and on new wood….and they can start blooming in late spring, with repeat bloom spurts all the way into fall, depending on the rainfall they receive. The flowers are trumpet-shaped and lightly fragrant, and can range in color through a wide range of the pinks….from creamy light pink through mid pinks through very pastel lavender pinks and almost whites, all the way to deep magentas, almost burgundy, with the possibility of bicolors….all with beautiful markings in the throats. They have quite an ability to withstand arid conditions. Easily cultivated, but they must have a well-drained site and must not be overwatered. In an area with more than 30 inches of annual rainfall, they must be planted in raised beds or berms and watered carefully, especially over the winter. TX MOUNTAIN LAUREL, DERMATOPHYLLUM(SOPHORA) SECUNDIFLORUM, FRAGRANT TREE, 20 SDS

20 VERY FRESH SEEDS, GATHERED THIS SEASON Technically, it is Dematophyllum secundiflorum, according to sources like Kew Royal Botanic Gardens, Wikipedia, etc., but more likely known as Sophora secundiflora….AND even MORE LIKELY known by a number of common names, most popularly Texas Mountain Laurel or Texas Mescal Bean. A tough as nails native tree. And even more beautiful. Beautiful purple to bluish violet, lavender, and even occasionally white flowers that look a lot like sweet peas–being a member of the same family……and even more ridiculously fragrant. Like 2 tons of purple Sweet Tarts got dumped right on top of you. Honey bees love them. These seeds were harvested from a tree with a particularly heavy blooming characteristic…as evidenced by the photos with the loads of seed pods. The Texas Mountain Laurel is an incredibly resilient and sturdy, evergreen with deep green leaves–bright green new growth–that are shiny, thick and leathery. The seed pods are soft green with white fuzz when new and age into a grayish/tannish by the end of the season and are practically indestructible. They hang on, going to black by the second season, and longer, until they are harvested or finally blown off by the wind. The trees begin to form their “tassels”–stems that will develop the next year’s buds as the seed pods are reaching maturity in September. The tassels winter over on the trees and can cause the tree to look a little untidy if they are heavy bloomers. People often try to trim them–destroying the next crop of blooms. These trees love the limestone soils of central and southwest Texas, from San Antonio and Austin out to the Chisos and Davis Mountains of the Big Bend area. They love full sun, but seem to do tolerably well in partial sun or as an understory tree that is not too shaded. These trees can be VERY difficult to transplant successfully when collected or dug from the wild. Starting them from seed or buying container grown seems to be the best option. The seeds are red, VERY hard with thick coats and poisonous.They need to be nicked–I usually give them just enough of a squeeze with a pair of pliers to hear the seed coat crack slightly to help jumpstart germination.
