You are bidding on 20 SATYR HILL AMERICAN HOLLY SEEDS – Ilex opaca ‘Satyr Hill’ .This cultivar is one of the top five most popular varieties of female American Holly. Producing large red berries that tend to be well distributed across the tree . The leaves have a distinctive “tortoise” shape and are typically 3” long and 2” wide. It is a vigorous grower with a compact, upright habit. The tree is remarkably easy to prune and shape. Gaps in foliage fill in faster than other top cultivars, and the central leader is less prone to damage. The tree can reach heights of 30’. Berry distribution is best by late October and retained through winter. Plant Hardiness Zones 5-9Mature Width 15-25Mature Height 30-40 Medicinal use of Holly: Holly is little used in modern herbalism. The leaves are diaphoretic, expectorant, febrifuge and tonic. They can be use fresh at almost any time of the year or can be harvested in late spring and dried for later use. They are used in the treatment of intermittent fevers, rheumatism, catarrh, pleurisy etc. The juice of the fresh leaves has been successfully used in the treatment of jaundice. The berries are violently emetic and purgative. They have been used in the treatment of dropsy and as a powder they have been used as an astringent to check bleeding. The berries are toxic, especially to children, and should not be used medicinally except under professional supervision. The root has been used as a diuretic, though there are more effective diuretics available .Edible parts of Holly: The leaves have been used as a tea substitute. The roasted fruit has been used as a coffee substitute. Some caution is advised here, since the fruit can be purgative and emetic. Other uses : Wood – strong, hard and dense, it polishes well, though it must be well dried and seasoned or else it warps badly. It is beautifully white, except at the center of very old trees, and is highly regarded by cabinet makers though it must be well seasoned. The heartwood of mature trees is used for printing blocks, engravings, turnery etc. The wood makes a good fuel, burning well even when green. You are bidding on 20 GRISCOM AMERICAN HOLLY SEEDS – Ilex opaca ” griscom ” , Hard, dull and mostly spiny leaves of small size. Trees generally maintain a pyramid shape. Fruit is vivid red. Gender is female. This holly doesn’t do as well as others by the coast. This variety doesn’t take well to transplanting. Prune in the spring. Check the gender before planting. This holly grows best in full sun. Size: Height: 0 ft. to 30 ft. Width: 0 ft. to 20 ft. USDA Hardiness Zone: 5 to 9 Bloom time Range: Mid Spring to Early Summer Medicinal use of American Holly: The berries are laxative, emetic and diuretic. They are used in the treatment of children’s diarrhoea, colic and indigestion. A tea made from the leaves has been used as a treatment for measles, colds etc. The leaves have also been used externally in the treatment of sore eyes, sore and itchy skin. A tea made from the bark was once used in the treatment of malaria and epilepsy. It has also been used as a wash for sore eyes and itchy skin. Edible parts of American Holly: The roasted leaves are used as a tea substitute. They do not contain caffeine. The drink was a very popular tea substitute during the American Civil war. Other uses of : A dye has been made from the berries . Wood – light, tough, not strong, close grained, highly shock resistant, easily worked. A strikingly white wood, it is valued for use in veneers and inlay. It weighs 36 lb per cubic foot. Too small for commercial exploitation, but it is valued for use in cabinet making and the interior finishes of houses, it is also used for making small items such as tool handles.
