Asclepias subverticillata is a perennial in the Apocynaceae family. Its native range is from the western and central U.S. to Mexico. The Zuni people collect the seed pods when two-thirds ripe and are used to make clothing from the fibers. The coma from the seed pods is used to make cords for fastening plumes to their prayer sticks. This species is similar to A. fascicularis and A. verticillata, except A. verticillata, which has more leaves per node, and cularis doesn’t grow outside the Pacific states very much. It is an abundant source for Monarch Butterflies and is an excellent choice for a xeriscaping project. It can grow to four feet tall and almost two feet wide. The leaves are very narrow and linear; around 4-5 come out of one node. The flowers are star-like in round umbels in bloom from May until September. It prefers to grow in full sun and is a drought-tolerant plant once established. Zones 5-8 Germination Sow seeds on top of the soil and lightly cover. Keep moist in a bright spot. Do not cover with plastic and keep temperatures around 65-75F. Germination is in 7-60 days.

From early to mid-summer, Horsetail Milkweed produces clusters of small, starry flowers in creamy white to pale green, often tinged with soft pink.
