People find hops exotic. Perhaps this is because of their close relationship to Cannabis. Aside from being used to flavor beer, Humulus lupulus (Hops) have a long history of herbal use among the Native Americans, mainly because of the soothing, sedative, tonic and calming effect on the body and the mind. Humulus lupulus contains asparagin, a diuretic; antibacterial agents humulone and lupulone; lupulin, a mild sedative/hypnotic. It is believed to be an aphrodisiac for men. Hop flowers were most often used as an infusion, but the flowers were also smoked. The fruit was applied externally as a poultice to ulcers, boils, swellings, etc. The female flowering heads were harvested in the autumn and used fresh or dried. The flowering heads are sprinkled with yellow translucent glands, which appear as a granular substance. Much of the hop’s use as a flavoring and medicinal plant depends on the abundance of this powdery substance. The hop plant is a vine. It needs a similar structure for support as a grape plant. Even if you do not grow them for beer they make an excellent ornamental plant. Hardy in zones 4-9. Easy to grow! Wild Hops Seed ~ 12 to 1000 hop seeds

Wild Hops Seed (Humulus Lupulus) This is seed from a wild hops that I found growing in Kansas near my farm. The flower cones are large and have a wonderful aroma and flavor. I like it so much that I am now growing it on my own property. Like many perennials, hops seed needs a period of cold scarification before it will germinate. A good method is to put seeds in an equal amount of moist sand and refrigerate from one to three months at about 41 degrees F. After that, plant the seeds at 68 degrees F. for one to two months. If the hops seeds have not germinated, put them back in the refrigerator and repeat the cycle. I will gladly combine shipping with other purchases, add items to cart and if the shipping doesn’t automatically adjust then request a combined invoice before paying and I will adjust the postage fairly.

Synonyms: Carpinus ostrya, Carpinus virginiana, A small to medium-sized, under story tree with a generally rounded crown. Rich moist woods, it is also found on dry gravelly slopes and ridges, often in the shade of oaks and other large trees. Typically grows 25-40′ tall with a slightly smaller spread. Features birch-like, oval to lance-shaped, sharply-serrated, dark yellowish-green leaves (to 5″ long). Leaves turn an undistinguished yellow in autumn and often drop early. Flowers are monoecious (reddish-brown male flowers and greenish female flowers appear in separate catkins on the same tree). Flowers are not particularly showy, although the male catkins are more prominent and are present throughout winter. Female catkins are followed by drooping clusters of sac-like, seed-bearing pods which, as the common name suggests, somewhat resemble the fruit of hops. Also commonly called ironwood because of its extremely hard and dense wood. Other uses : Wood – close-grained, very hard, very strong, durable. It weighs 51 lb per cubic foot. The wood is of a very high quality but the tree is not large enough to be used commercially. It is used locally for posts, mallets, tool handles and applications where resistance to wear is essential. A very good fuel, though it is almost impossible to split.
