Loosen the soil to a depth of at least 6 inches and remove any rocks or debris. 2. Plant Seeds: Sow onion seeds directly into the prepared soil, spacing them about ½ inch apart and covering them with a thin layer of soil. 3. Water: Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Water gently to avoid displacing the seeds. 4. Provide Sunlight: Onions prefer full sun, so choose a location that receives at least 6-8 hours of sunlight per day. 5. Thin Seedlings: Once the seedlings emerge, thin them to ensure proper spacing, leaving about 4-6 inches between each plant. 6. Mulch: Mulch around the onion plants to retain soil moisture, suppress weeds, and protect the roots from temperature fluctuations. 7. Care: Keep the soil evenly moist throughout the growing season. Fertilize lightly with a balanced fertilizer every 3-4 weeks. 8. Harvest: Onions are typically ready to harvest when the tops turn yellow and start to fall over, usually 100-150 days after planting. Pull up the onions and allow them to dry in a warm, well-ventilated area for 2-3 weeks. Note: Growing onions from seed requires patience, but the reward of homegrown onions is worth the wait!

Planting Instructions: Soil Preparation and Fertilizing: Choose an area with well-draining soil and receives full sunlight each day. When it is dry enough to not stick to garden tools, work the soil. Before seeding or transplanting, remove all rocks and trash from the soil, then dig or plow the soil 4-6 inches deep and rake up several times to break up large clods. Tip: If you live in an area with heavy clay or hard soil, add a 1 inch layer of compost to improve soil texture. Planting: Green onions prefer cooler weather and can survive winters to produce again in the spring. To plant bunching onion seeds, you may start seeds indoors about 6 weeks before you plan to transplant them to the garden. Green onion seeds need temperatures of at least 50°F to germinate properly. Or, you may direct sow onion seeds outdoors by planting them 1/4 inch deep. You may use a string line if you prefer straight rows, plant, then pinch to cover seeds. Place the seeds 1 inch apart in rows spaced 1-2 feet apart. When the plants are about 2 inches high, thin them to 1 plant every 2-3 inches. You may eat the extra plants as green onions. Planting Depth: 1/4 inch Within-Row Spacing: 1 inch, then 2-3 inches Between-Row Spacing: 1- 2 feet Care During the Season: Watering: Watering once a week is usually enough in the Spring. You may need to water more often during dry, windy weather. Slow, deep watering helps the root system grow strong. Weeding and Pruning: Weeds are easy to pull or cut when they are 3-4 inches tall. Try not to let weeds or grasses grow large because they will compete with green onions for nutrients. If hoeing to remove weeds, be careful not to cut too deeply as cutting the feeder rooters may slow the plant’s growth. It is better to pull by hand when possible. Fertilizing: When the green onion plants have 5-6 leaves, you may optionally apply fertilizer to help grow larger scallions and bigger bulbs. Use about 1/2 cup of fertilizer for each 10 feet of onion row. Scatter the fertilizer evenly between the rows around the plants. Then water the green onions after adding the fertilizer. Insecticides: Green onions have few insect problems. Many Insecticides are available in garden centers for use if needed. Bt-based insecticides and sulfur are organic options that can be used. Sevin is a synthetic insecticide option. Before using a pesticide, please read the label and always follow cautions, warnings and directions. Diseases: Diseases may be problem on onions. Brown leaf tips or brown spots on the middle and lower parts of leaves may be caused by plant diseases. Sulfur has fungicidal properties than can help control many diseases. Neem oil and other fungicides are available for use. Please always follow cautions, warnings, and directions. Harvesting: Green onions may be picked from the time they are pencil size until they begin to form bulbs. Harvest the largest plants first so that those left can continue to grow. You may also cut the green onions at the base, leaving a few inches above the ground. Green onions will continue to grow at the cut point. Green onions can be stored in the refrigerator or packed into freezer bags for long term storage. Tokyo is an abundant bunching onion that looks just like what you would get from the farmers market. I remember my mother and her mom relishing these onions out of the neighbors garden. They seemed to always be on the dinner table. Tokyo is only mildly pungent and very uniform in growth.Tokyo Long White Bunching is excellent for farmers market or keeping a supply out in the garden for fresh eating. Use the tops on spuds or sauté them with olive oil in your favorite dish. We use them in omelets with some smoked bacon. Slightly pungent, long white shanks with stiff blue-green tops. Resistant to hot weather and also fairly cold tolerant, but not recommended for over-wintering. Be sure to provide adequate moisture. THANK YOU FOR YOUR PATRONAGE AND HAPPY GARDENING! HOMEGROWN HEIRLOOM VEGETABLES JUST TASTE BETTER! INCLUDES BASIC GROWING INSTRUCTIONS a quick note on seed storage… I feel through my experience the best way to store your seed is in the refrigerator. Some vegetable varieties produce seed that remains viable for many years (tomatoes) and others produce seed that does not store well under any conditions (onions). I believe seed stored under refrigerated conditions could last 10 years or more. I planted some ACE 55 seeds from 2000 in the summer of 2017. They did great! Germination rates were in the 90% and above range…these seeds had been sitting in a box in my garage for the past 17 years! I have some of that seed available now listed as Marlboro Ace 55. GET SOME! At Frontier Farms, we specialize in many varieties of Heirloom tomatoes, peppers, plus many other vegetable varieties. WHAT IS AN HEIRLOOM? Heirloom plants are grown from seeds that have been handed down thru generations, saved from year to year, some varieties dating back hundreds of years. Many made the migration from Europe and the East with the immigrants coming to the USA. The seeds are never cross pollinated and so they remain true to their particular characteristics. Heirloom tomatoes come in all colors, shapes, and sizes ? Reds, Pinks, Yellows, Orange, White, Green, Striped, and Black. Ranging in sizes of cherry and grape to large grapefruit size, meaty, or juicy. WHY HEIRLOOM? These tomatoes are more natural, they are non GMO (genetically modified). They do not have as long of a shelf life as store bought tomatoes, but that is what makes them special. They have a real fantastic tomato flavor not found in grocery store offerings. These tomatoes are indeterminate (they grow all season, they flower all season and they produce tomatoes all season. They don’t stop until frost. Once heirloom tomatoes are picked, they do not have a long shelf life as hybrids but they more than make up for any shortcomings in flavor. Please see my other listings for more NON-GMO and heirloom seed varieties and thank you!
