Rich green leaves are topped by citron green buds that open to soft coral pink later in the season. Forms a beautiful dome of flowers. It is also Deer and rabbit resistant and salt tolerant and is hardy in zones 3-9, so can be grown in some of the coldest areas of the country. You are bidding on about 20 CARDOON SEEDS ( Cynara cardunculus ) also called the Artichoke thistle, is a member of the thistle family related to the Globe artichoke.This silver leaved Mediterranean native makes an excellent focal point in the large ornamental border as well as in the kitchen garden. It grows to 6 feet tall and forms spectacular lilac-blue flowers which can be eaten in the same way as globe artichokes. It is also grown for its stems and leaf-ribs which can be harvested and blanched in the autumn .Propagation is by seeds, suckers, or root division. In addition to a proper climate, cardoon requires a rich soil or abundant fertilizer and plenty of water and sun . CLIMATIC REQUIREMENTS – Cardoon does best in a frost-free coastal area with cool foggy summers. It is closely related to the globe artichoke but is more vigorous and tolerant of climatic variations. Leaves can reach 3-5 feet in length with crowns 4-6 inches in diameter under ideal conditions. Cardoon will be inedible when grown under hot conditions due to the strong bitter compounds that form. SOIL – Cardoon is a perennial plant that will grow on a wide range of soils, but it produces best on a deep, fertile, well-drained soil. The plant is deep rooted and should be planted on soils that afford adequate area for root development. Medicinal use of Cardoon: The cardoon has become important as a medicinal herb in recent years following the discovery of cynarin. This bitter-tasting compound, which is found in the leaves, improves liver and gall bladder function, stimulates the secretion of digestive juices, especially bile, and lowers blood cholesterol levels. The leaves are anticholesterolemic, antirheumatic, cholagogue, digestive, diuretic, hypoglycaemic and lithontripic. They are used internally in the treatment of chronic liver and gall bladder diseases, jaundice, hepatitis, arteriosclerosis and the early stages of late-onset diabetes. Commonly called button snake-root , button eryngo , Beargrass and Bear’s grass . This is native to the tallgrass prairies of central and eastern North America, from Minnesota east to Ohio and south to Texas and Florida, including a few spots in Connecticut, New Jersey, Maryland, and Delaware. This perennial plant is 2-5′ tall. The leaves are long and strap-like, rather stiff in texture, and up to 2½’ long and 2½” across.The entire plant is bluish or greyish green, and quite hairless. The flowers stalk consists of several prickly balls of flowers that are individually about ½–1″ across. These whitish green balls contain numerous small white flowers that are individually surrounded by prickly bracts. A flower consists of 5 white petals, a divided white pistil, and several white stamens with light brown anthers. Each ball of flowers is subtended by a star-like rosette of small leaves. Fruit: The fruit essentially looks the same as the flowers, only darknening to a dull brown and remaining on the stalks for the remainder of the season.
